David Teague led the second Development Day of the year for aspiring Islamic coaches in the Bachar Houli Foundation’s (BHF) Coaching Pathways Program in September.
Teague, the BHF’s Coaching Lead, drew on his 17 years of experience to share insights and practical takeaways to coaches in attendance. He also presented workshops intended to provide practical takeaways for coaches to apply to their local or representative level.
The program hopes to give aspiring Muslim coaches a chance to develop their craft and provide them with the opportunity to reach the highest level of coaching. The program is supported by the AFL’s National Coaching Program by providing accreditation and coaching pathways.
The selected coaches participate in the Foundation’s National and State Academies, and engage in a 12-month program with development sessions set up throughout the year.
Mohammed Kaakour, member of the Coaching Pathways Program, said “It’s been amazing to build strong connections with other coaches through the program.”
“Being part of the program for the past few years, I have been able to implement fundamentals to bring back to local level,” he said.
The significance of working with AFL mentors such as Mark ‘Chocco’ Williams, Adem Yze and Teague throughout his time in the program isn’t lost on Kaakour.
“They’ve been at the elite level…for them to educate and teach, and the opportunity to bounce ideas has been really good. I really appreciate the time they’ve invested.”
Munir Elhouli, a fellow member of the Coaching Pathways Program, echoed Kaakour’s sentiments.
“I’ve learned the value of preparation, and the importance of a strong support network, both for me as a coach and for my football side,” Elhouli said.
“It’s been great to learn new ways to go about things as a coach.”
‘Whether that’s as simple as footy drills, or implementing standards and themes at a club, my experience throughout my time in the program has been really good,” he said.
Working closely with David Teague has been particularly insightful for many in the program. As Zammy Muhtari reflected, “To work with David Teague as our mentor and coach has been amazing.
“He’s given us the support to grow and learn as much as possible,” he said.
“David gives great insights into the modern game as well as the tactical side of the game.”
“This really helps with growth as a coach as well as a good understanding about the mastery of coaching,” Muhtari said.
