Each year, the Bachar Houli Foundation (BHF) brings together the country’s most promising young Muslim athletes for an unforgettable week-long experience.

Drawing participants from across Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia, the BHF’s national academies provide both unique and cutting-edge opportunities for emerging male and female talent to reach their full potential, both on and off the field.

In September, the National Senior Boys Academy welcomed talented footballers aged 15 to 18-years-old to Victoria for a residential seven-day program.

The week-long program is designed to immerse participants in a high-performance environment, with experienced coaches and mentors such as David Teague, Saad El-Hawli and Hussien El Achkar involved throughout the week.

As part of the academy, participants of the BHF’s National Senior Boys Academy featured in two matches against the Western Jets and the Eddie Betts Foundation throughout the week.

Just weeks later, Adelaide hosted the National Senior Girls Sports Academy, bringing together outstanding young women from across Australia for a five-day residential program.

Earning selection through the Foundation’s state academies, the 16 selected participants engaged in high-performance training, leadership workshops and personal development sessions designed to develop physical ability and strengthen confidence.

A highlight of the academy was the opportunity for participants to engage with mentor Tina Rahimi. They learned from and trained alongside her during an intensive boxing session.

While each Academy delivered its own unique experience, both share the same purpose of empowering young Muslims through sport.

Fadiya Merhi said “the (National Senior Girls) academy was incredible.”

“Since I have been a part of the BHF, I have become more confident and have made such strong friendships,” she said.

“Being part of the Academy this year is an experience I’ll always remember.”

Essendon small forward and BHF academy coach Hussien El Achkar said it was “pretty special coming back here as a staff member.”

“Last year I was here as a participant, trying to learn from the staff members,” El Achkar said.

“It’s a real honour coming back and giving back to the people who gave back to me.”
